5.11 Demonstrate differentiation of instruction for all students utilizing increasingly complex print and digital text
“Fair doesn't mean everybody doing or getting the same thing; fair means everyone doing or getting what they need to be successful”

That is a quote from my mentor teacher that I will take throughout my teaching career and I will tell all my classes in the future. Everyone is different and we all learn different. As teachers we cannot use all the same strategies or resources for every child, we need differentiation. In our classroom we use leveled books during centers. We have the centers divided into high, middle and lower reading levels and we use different books for each group. I feel the best thing about it, is that each book looks about the same but different colors, so the students themselves do not notice that some students are getting easier material than others. We do the same process with all the students; we start off by looking at the cover of the books and predict what the story will be about. Next, I have them read the story independently and then we choral read the story. During our second read I stop and ask questions to assess vocabulary and comprehension. At the end we answer the questions together in the back of the book. I have attached a picture of three of my reading groups, higher, middle and lower with the books they read at the bottom. Also attached is a voice recording of the lower level students doing their choral reading.
