Oral development is extremely important for a child’s success, this is something that they will need throughout their whole lives. Teaching this skill at an early age will help them tremendously. One way to develop oral language skills is through oral presentations. In my class we give the students a wide variety of opportunities to present the work that they have done in class. For the end of their unit week I instructed them to pick one of the writings that they had done since the time they had started school. Their task was to use the writing skills they had learned and make their writing piece better. They were given about half an hour each day for 4 days to edit their papers. I told them to use the computers or books from the classroom library as a research tools for adding details to their writing.
At the end of the week the students orally presented their final writing piece to the class. Some of the students did a great job revise their papers and it was evident that they used their time wisely to make their papers better. On the other hand, some students did not use their time wisely and their final piece was similar to their beginning piece. I did realize that most of the students were nervous when they had to present alone in front of the class, this shows me that they have not been given the opportunity to do this in their past grades. I let them sit in the teacher’s chair, which they loved, so they could feel a little more at ease with their presentations. I do feel that they need more practice in oral presentations, but I am confident that they will be more confident at the end of their fourth grade.
