Effective writing instruction is very important for a student’s success. This process does not happen in one day, it takes time and effort. It is also a concept that cannot be taught by explanation or showing a PowerPoint; it needs to be modeled.
My students are learning how to write an expository five paragraph essay. I have attached a lesson I did with them on writing their conclusion paragraphs. After that lesson they were ready to begin writing their essay. Since it is October I chose a Halloween prompt: “Explain why Halloween is important.” Working with their table groups, the students had to use a brainstorming map to come up with three important things dealing with Halloween. After completing that they were given a green Kagan detail sheet, at the top where it says “topic”, they wrote their first main idea, then the question “How is it important to Halloween?” I told them to make sure their topic sentence answered that question. Then on the back they were to put two details about their main idea and a personal story. On the next day they got their 2nd detail sheet and did the same process using their 2nd main idea and then they did the same thing with their 3rd main idea. The following day I instructed them that they were to right a good introduction and conclusion for their essay. On the last day they took all the organizers they had completed, put all their information together and wrote their essay on Halloween paper. I also had them draw a picture that went with their essay. This process took about seven days. I have attached student work through this whole process.
The next step is to do this whole process independently using a different prompt. I believe using these organizers are beneficial for them to see what steps they need to take in order to write a good five paragraph essay.
