The number one problem I see in students these days is that they rush through assessments to just get them done with. They do not reread or check their work, this results in making simple mistakes. The students are getting wrong answers on material they know how to do, they are just not taking their time to make sure they are answering the question that is being asked. I did a Think, Pair, Share activity with my students before one of their FCAT weekly assessments. I put these two questions on the SMARTBoard:
What are some good test taking strategies that you have learned?
What do you do when you come across a text that is difficult?
Then I gave them three minutes to think about the questions and come up with some ideas. After that they were to pair with their shoulder partners and talk about the ideas they both had while jotting them down. I gave them about 6 minutes for the pairing part and then I had each group share their ideas. There was some groups that had repeated ideas and some had new ones. When I told them we were going to do this activity they said they had never done a "Think, Pair, Share", so I explained how it work and what was the purpose of it. Through this activity the students gained strategies to self correct themselves during assessments and general reading
